Graduate and undergraduate students from the Department of Safety Engineering (Department Chair: Professor Tae-Hoon Kim) at Incheon National University (President: In-Jae Lee) achieved outstanding results by winning the Grand Prize, First Prize, and Excellence Awards (Minister of Employment and Labor Award, President of the Korean Society of Safety Award, President of the Korea Industrial Safety Association Award, CEO of Korea Midland Power Co., Ltd. Award) at the “11th Risk Assessment Competition,” hosted by the Korean Society of Safety and held at Maison Glad Jeju on November 13.

The Grand Prize (1st place) was awarded to Team S.A.L.T (Jeong-Seon Park, Beom-Su Jang, Il-Hyeok Son, Hee-Ju Yang, So-Yoon Park / Advisor: Prof. Min-Cheol Lee).

The First Prize (2nd place) went to Team SAIFETY (Yu-Jeong Choi, Ji-Woo Song, Sang-Jin Park, Soo-Bin Kim / Advisor: Prof. Tae-Hoon Kim).

The Excellence Awards (3rd place) were given to Team Silhwan-ya (Yun-Gyu Cho, Do-Hyun Park, Kyung-Hwan Seol, Eun-Bi Kwon, Young-Ji Lim / Advisor: Prof. Min-Cheol Lee) and Team BTS (Bow-Tigers) (Seong-Hyeop Ko, Dong-Hyun Koo, Ju-Hye Jeon, Kang-Jun Choi, Se-Hee Kim / Advisor: Prof. Min-Cheol Lee).

This risk assessment competition is organized by the Korean Society of Safety and sponsored by the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, the Korea Industrial Safety Association, and Korea Midland Power Co., Ltd. More than 50 teams of undergraduate and graduate students from across the country participate annually, and the final winning teams were selected through the first document evaluation and second presentation evaluation conducted from May to August 2025.

The research submitted to the risk assessment competition aimed to solve problems by allowing each team to freely select topics and creatively utilize programs. Participants designed various accident scenarios in everyday life and industrial environments, estimated potential damages, and were evaluated on their abilities to reduce accidents and enhance safety. Through this process, they demonstrated not only their understanding of various risk assessment methodologies such as Consequence Analysis (CA), Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA), and Bow-Tie design, but also their ability to deeply understand and apply mechanisms for estimating the extent of damage from different incidents.

The Department of Safety Engineering at Incheon National University continued its success from last year by winning awards again at this year’s 11th Risk Assessment Competition. With four teams simultaneously winning the Grand Prize, First Prize, and Excellence Awards, the department once again proved its excellence. Through continuous academic passion and outstanding analytical capabilities, Incheon National University has been recognized for its remarkable competence and expertise in the field of risk assessment.

Professors Min-Cheol Lee and Tae-Hoon Kim from the Department of Safety Engineering at Incheon National University, who supervised this competition, expressed their delight, saying, “These outstanding results prove the exceptional research capabilities of our students in Safety Engineering at Incheon National University,” and added, “We hope that many of our students will pursue the dream of becoming safety experts through graduate studies, in addition to careers as safety managers.” They also expressed sincere gratitude for the support provided for this risk assessment research by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP) (supported project: No. RS-2025-02603127, Carbon-Free Fuel Gas Turbine Design, Manufacturing, and Safety Innovation Research Center).
