Incheon National University (President In-jae Lee) announced that three faculty members from the Department of Marine Science have been listed in the 2024 single-year category of the “Top 2% of World Scientists,” published by the global academic publisher Elsevier and Stanford University, reaffirming the department’s outstanding international research competitiveness.
The “Top 2% of World Scientists” list is compiled annually by Professor John Ioannidis’ research team at Stanford University, based on citation indicators from Elsevier’s Scopus database. Approximately 230,000 researchers worldwide are evaluated, and the top 2% with the highest research impact are selected.
The evaluation incorporates multiple metrics, including citation counts, h-index, and citations excluding self-citations.
This year, three faculty members—Seung-gyu Kim, Jae-sung Lee, and Chang-beom Jeong—were named in the single-year category. Notably, Professor Seung-gyu Kim was additionally selected in the career-long category, demonstrating exceptional long-term research impact.
Jae-sung Lee, Chair of the Department of Marine Science, stated:
“The Department of Marine Science at Incheon National University is expanding fundamental scientific understanding of the ocean while strengthening international collaborative research based on the university’s interdisciplinary research capabilities and Incheon’s geographic strengths.
We are focusing on research that can make meaningful contributions to solving key global challenges such as climate change and marine pollution. We will continue to nurture outstanding research talent and position ourselves as a leading research-centered department in the fields of marine and environmental sciences.”
Meanwhile, the Department of Marine Science conducts multidisciplinary research on issues such as marine ecosystem changes and marine environmental pollution. The department is also committed to nurturing future marine experts through support from the Yellow Sea Research Institute and the BK21 Four Global Blue Carbon Talent Development Education–Research Team (led by Professor Jang-gyun Kim).
